S.01The basics

How U.S. income tax actually works.

01

Federal income tax

Progressive — 7 brackets from 10% to 37%. Only income within each band is taxed at that band's rate. Your “marginal rate” is the rate on your last dollar earned, not your overall rate.

02

State income tax

9 states have no income tax (FL, TX, WA, NV, SD, WY, AK, NH, TN). The rest range from a flat 2.5% in Arizona to 13.3% top marginal in California.

03

FICA — Social Security & Medicare

6.2% Social Security on the first $184,500 (2026 cap) plus 1.45% Medicare on every dollar. Self-employed pay double. This is independent of brackets and not deductible.

S.02State-by-state

State income tax — 50 states + DC.

These are the top 2026 rates, paid only on the highest part of a big income. Most people pay less, and the calculator above works out your real rate.
